Don't get me wrong here. I'm totally psyched for you, and have an immense amount of respect for this accomplishment. I'm the one who bailed on my history grad program rather than do actual work, so I have a sense of what you've done here.
On the other hand, I am a shallow bastard who really wants to see Jack Voltaire in the middle of a Group Extended Contest with a pile of sweaty young groupies.
Yep, that's the guy. My favorite scene in my favorite movie.
I'm a latecomer to your journal -- what was the subject of your dissertation? Committees never do seem to enjoy sassy much. Maybe later on you can re-sassitate your dissertation as a book? [Had to say it.]
So strange that we met this past year-- it was like going through the final days of the world together. Congratulations! I can definitely empathize with you right now.
When is your viva? Are you nervous about it? I feel like I should still be studying.
For all I know we could viva on the same day. . .
Canadians conquering two super-nations! The way it should be.
Thanks! I felt the kinship too this last couple of months. In fact, I was actually reading back through your journal in the last couple of days to find your posts on post-dissertation depression, and also on the irritating inability of MS Word to text wrap around tables. So I definitely felt like a partner in crime.
I'm going to blow my academic cred admitting this, but our department actually has no formal viva/defense. I've presented my work to the department in a couple of seminars / sample job talks etc., but there's no do or die final presentation. Once the committee of three signs my dissertation, which they have, I'm done, baby. I get the paperwork and the funny hat on June 10th.
You follow in the footsteps of the many important Doctors who have gone before you: Doctor Strange, Doctor Pepper and, of course, the good Doc Ock. Congrats! I look forward to the next time we're in a crowded room, and I can yell, "Is there a doctor in the house?"

But mainly the psyched and respectful part.

Congratulations again!
