[Edit: And Tanenhaus has just posted a thoughtful reply.] With Schlesinger’s death, Tanenhaus laments, “America lost its last great public historian.” “Why,” he asks, “do current historians seem unable to engage the world as confidently as Mr. Schlesinger did?”
