There are worse things to be than a plumber. In fact, maybe that's a model IT could emulate. Given that all those dudes in the computer lab are not going to be dot-com millionaires, IT workers could unionize in a skilled trade union / guild approach. Highly skilled blue collar workers have a pretty good gig as long as everybody with that skill set maintains solidarity.
